At the 2013 Senior Expo, an exercise physiologist from the Wellness Center leads a class in chair-based yoga.
Fauquier Hospital’s Senior Expo, slated for Saturday, October 11 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, will provide an opportunity for those 55 and older to take advantage of free health screenings and get expert advice from health professionals.
Urologists Dr. Brian DeCastro and Dr. Kathryn Sullivan will team up at 9:30 a.m. to discuss bladder, prostate and kidney cancer, hematuria (blood in the urine), urinary incontinence and overactive bladder. They will go over the signs and symptoms, along with treatment options.
Health screenings will be offered in the Conference Center on the first floor of the hospital and are free. These will include: blood glucose; hypertension; bone density; height and weight checks; balance assessment; flexibility assessment; cholesterol, and prostate-specific antigen (PSA).
Community experts will be at the Expo to offer advice on: safety; stroke prevention; Medicaid and Medicare; Social Security; technology; community resources and senior services; caregiving; support groups, and osteoporosis. The Sheriff's Department will address privacy concerns, fraud and reverse mortgage issues for seniors. A pharmacist will be on hand to consult with visitors about medications and their interactivity. Those who bring their medications with them will be able to get a personal evaluation of their situation.
The Bistro on the Hill restaurant will be open during and after the event, and the Bistro’s chef, James Wedderburn, will offer healthy cooking demonstrations throughout the morning.
Fitness demonstrations highlighting Zumba, tai chi and yoga will be presented in the Bistro, courtesy of the FauquierHealth Wellness Center, which will also offer chair massages outside the Sycamore Room.
Anyone who pre-registers will be entered into a drawing for great prizes — including an iPad Air. Register by calling 540-316-3588 or go to www.fauquierhealth.org.
