Birthing Services/Family Birthing Center

Northern Virginia Birthing Center

The anticipation of a new baby brings a lot of joy and excitement — and a lot of new decisions. One of the most important decisions is choosing a facility and staff that puts the patient first. Fauquier Health offers an unmatched quality of care and programs that has made it one of the top-rated Northern Virginia birthing centers.

The O’Shaughnessy Family Birthing Center at Fauquier Health offers the very best in maternity and delivery care. Our state of the art birthing center serves much of Northern Virginia – including Warrenton, Bull Run and Haymarket. We look at each birth as a natural, normal and uniquely personal event, and our expert caring staff treats each family with the dignity and respect they deserve

New Neonatologist Welcomed and
Intermediate Care Nursery Renovated and Expanded

The recent renovations at the ICN have doubled its size and added four beds, for a total of seven. The neonatal ICN -- designed to provide care for babies who are born at Fauquier Hospital but are born prematurely or are too sick to go home right away -- means that parents of these babies can be with their newborns every day without having to travel to Northern Virginia or Charlottesville. Some infants will still need the care that can only be provided in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – a higher level of care -- but many babies will be able to remain in Fauquier, near their loved ones.
Neonatologist Dr. Elsie Mainali,

nursery’s new medical director.

The nursery operates under the guidance of neonatologist Dr. Elsie Mainali, the nursery’s new medical director. Rodger Baker, CEO of Fauquier Health, said, “Having a neonatologist overseeing the nursery is providing a level of care beyond what we have been able to provide in the past.”
Dr. Mainali and neonatal nurse practitioners will provide ongoing bedside care for babies who need extra attention until they are strong enough to reunite with their families.

The O’Shaughnessy Family Birthing Center offers beautiful, private rooms.

Once a new mom checks in, she remains in the same room to labor, deliver, recover and relax in after her baby is born. There is no shuffling from place to place, and our moms never have to compromise comfort for the highest quality of medical care. Our center features the latest medical equipment in a comfortable, homelike setting, and there is also a dedicated surgical suite just steps from the private birthing rooms, just in case there is a need for a different level of care.

Our family birthing center also supports families during this very special time. We understand the importance of bonding right from the start, and our new mothers and fathers are encouraged to spend as much time as possible with their babies. Each spacious suite is designed for the newborn to remain in the room with mom, and there is an additional bed in the room for dad, or other care partner.

"Baby Care Essentials" is designed to help new parents recognize their newborn's normal appearance. It covers diapering, bathing, cord care, circumcision care, feeding methods and infant safety. Also learn about crying and how to comfort your baby.

"Breastfeeding" will teach new mom's what they need to know to be successful in breastfeeding.  The importance of breastfeeding, nutrition, positioning, latch on and more will be covered.  Partners of expecting moms are encouraged to attend.
